I’m Just Not That Into You

by Rocket on November 21, 2008

Welcome back!

I’m straying from the format here in order to rant a bit about something that transpired over the past couple days. I’ve shared an exchange of emails with a designer, who will remain nameless, that refuses to accept my point of view on their work.

Before I go off on a tangent, I want to say that I appreciate the time an energy it takes for any designer to put samples together and email them in hopes of getting some free promotion. Being a designer myself, I fully understand that we don’t always market ourselves effectively and anyone willing to help is a godsend. Part of the reason I started this site was to help give some exposure to lots of designers, whether they’re established or brand new to the industry.

All that being said, this site is not a democracy. What I decide to post is purely my decision. Just because you send me countless emails with dozens of your poster designs does not mean that I am obligated to read all of them, let alone post them. If the work is solid, I’ll probably post one or two and point a link to any site you want people to know about. However, if the work is not to my own personal standard, I’m not going to post it up no matter how many times you tell me your work is worthy.

My taste is not everyone’s taste. Some poster designers get a lot of critical aclaim and I am not into them. Other designers I love, but others can’t stand. I don’t claim to be the end-all-be-all of poster critics, but since I pay the bills here, I’m going to continue to post up what I want and reject the stuff I don’t. If I choose not to post your work, handle it like a professional. Don’t send constant emails trying to convince me, and then turn around and blast me with insults like “those who can’t do, blog” when I ask you to stop emailing.

If the culprit is reading this, I tried to be diplomatic with you, but if you send me one more email, I’m going to go ahead and post your work in a new post theme called What Not To Do where I’ll deconstruct your crap work for the entire world. Eviscerate will be your new middle name.

To the rest of my awesome readership, I apologize for this tyrade. I hate putting a negative spin on things, but I felt the need to address this situation for anyone else who might take rejection a little too harshly. From here on out, we are all about positivity and killer poster designer… in my opinion.

Hey Bro, vent! It’s healthy… you’re right, this is your blog and you control the content. By the way, I love the theme. :)

Thanks, Miguel. After I posted this, I was worried I sounded like a whiny bastard. Even if I am, at least it’s not completely unwarranted.
